Main Duties include:

Position Summary

The Household Manager is responsible for the overall management, organization, and coordination of the day-to-day operations of a private residence, ensuring the highest standards of service, efficiency, discretion, and hospitality. The successful candidate will proactively oversee household staff, contractors, maintenance, budgets, guest services, and family support requirements while maintaining complete confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Household Operations Management

  • Manage, organize, and coordinate the daily operations of the household.
  • Ensure all owner and guest requirements are consistently met and exceeded through proactive leadership and exceptional service.
  • Maintain the residence to the highest standards of presentation, cleanliness, functionality, and readiness.
  • Develop and implement household procedures and operational standards.

Staff Management

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate household staff, including housekeepers, cooks, maids, chauffeurs, and other domestic personnel.
  • Organize staff schedules, duties, and performance expectations.
  • Foster a professional, service-oriented working environment.
  • Conduct ongoing training to ensure service excellence and adherence to household standards.

Vendor and Contractor Management

  • Coordinate and supervise external contractors, including gardeners, maintenance personnel, security providers, and specialist vendors.
  • Schedule, oversee, and evaluate contracted services.
  • Ensure all work is completed efficiently, safely, and to the required standard.

Property Maintenance

  • Monitor the physical condition of the property and all associated assets.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee all maintenance, repairs, renovations, and improvement projects.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Provide regular updates to the owners regarding property conditions, maintenance requirements, and ongoing projects.

Financial Administration

  • Manage household budgets and expenditure.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of household supplies, equipment, wines, and spirits.
  • Compile data and maintain records for financial reporting.
  • Track invoices, payments, and service agreements.
  • Maintain organized household files and documentation.

Hospitality and Guest Services

  • Receive guests and oversee all visitor arrangements.
  • Answer and manage residence telephone communications professionally.
  • Ensure exceptional hospitality standards for family members and guests.
  • Coordinate entertainment, special events, and social functions.
  • Oversee and participate in formal table settings and meal service.
  • Serve meals and beverages when required.

Butler Service and Etiquette

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of:
    • Anticipatory service
    • Privacy and confidentiality
    • Professional discretion
    • Being friendly but never familiar
    • Remaining invisible yet available
  • Maintain impeccable standards of etiquette, protocol, and formal service.
  • Possess strong knowledge of wines, spirits, and cellar management.

Travel and Lifestyle Management

  • Coordinate family travel arrangements and logistics.
  • Oversee packing, unpacking, and travel preparations.
  • Manage itineraries and ensure smooth travel experiences.

Security and Confidentiality

  • Assist with household and family security measures.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding family matters, business affairs, and guest information.
  • Monitor access to the residence and ensure appropriate visitor protocols are followed.

Technical Property Management

Possess sufficient technical knowledge to identify, troubleshoot, and proactively address issues relating to:

  • Kitchen appliances and equipment
  • Wine refrigerators and cellar systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Plumbing systems
  • Home automation and smart home technologies
  • Internet and communications systems
  • Audio-visual and entertainment systems

Housekeeping Support

  • Perform light housekeeping duties when required.
  • Assist the housekeeping team during busy periods or special events.
  • Ensure household standards are consistently maintained throughout the property.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience as a Household Manager, Estate Manager, Butler, Chief of Staff, or similar senior private service role.
  • Experience managing luxury private residences and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Formal hospitality, butler, or household management training preferred.

Languages requirements

English mother tongue

Skills & diplomas 

Skills

Minimum 3 years experienced as a Butler with HNWI families.

Graduate of The British Butler Institute course

Ability to deliver a high degree of service etiquette

Management and service skills

Broad knowledge of household items and their care

Business and technology capability including computers and accounting

Negotiating and supervisory skills for outside contractors and other staff
